To Kill a Jolly Roger

Ever want to fly a Single Mission or go up in Hot Shot and not feel like your name should be Capt. J. Hook?   Maybe you want some variety or just don't want any nose art.  Well here's how to eliminate the pesky skull once and for all.

note:
This should work on all aircraft in Mig Alley but I have not tested it on the other flyable planes, I'm strictly a F-86 jock so you F-51 propeller-heads and F-84 / F-80 mud
movers let us know if this works for you.

This was figured out by Richard Leszczynski    Richard.Leszczynski@lincoln.oxford.ac.uk
So he gets the credit and if it wipes out your hard earned Spring Offensive give Richard ALL the glory too!  I don't think you should worry, I've been using it for more than a month
with no problems.

Here is the default F-86 with the omnipresent Jolly Roger

Here is an in-flight shot of the Sabre sans the skull plus skin improvements.

note: The tail, fuselage, nose and exhaust area have been modified.  I was not satisfied
with the look of the original skin so I did a little shading and detail work on the nose cone, gun ports tail pipe and various other panels.  This is a work in progress with more
updates  forthcoming.  If you want to replace the default aircraft it's easy.

1.  Navigate, using Windows Explorer  to your where your image files live, it is usually:
     C:\rowan\mig\IMGMAP16

2.  Rename the following files:
     F86FUSEL.x8 ...I usually name it F86FUSELoriginal.x8
     F86NOSE.x8   ... F86NOSEoriginal.x8
     F86TAIL.x8      ... F86TAILoriginal.x8
note: this is a checker tailed 51st FIW the default is the 4th FIW with the standard
yellow ID tail stripe, to keep it just don't use my F86TAIL.x8 file.

3.  Download, using the links below the corresponding replacement files and paste into
     your
C:\rowan\mig\IMGMAP16 folder.

For Internet Explorer users right mouse click and choose: Save Target As...

For Netscape users right mouse click and choose: Save Link As...

F86FUSELplain.x8    note: you will need to rename this F86FUSEL.x8
      F86NOSE.x8
      F86TAIL.x8

4.  Run Mig Alley and you have a new updated skin.

Now let's go after that Jolly Roger.

1.  Copy the blank nose1.bmp (it must be named nose1.bmp) into your:
     C:\rowan\mig\Artwork\NOSESTD directory.

nose1.bmp
note: before copying you might want to save the original nose1.bmp and rename it
nose1jolly.bmp and save it some place else, it is the dread Jolly Roger.  It cant stay in
that folder, there can only be 16 image files in this folder if there are more you will die!
Well you man not die but the program will screw up.  Now the fun part.

2.  Open Wordpad or NotePad and paste the text at the bottom of this page exactly as
is into a new .txt file.

3.  Save that file to your MiG Alley directory giving it whatever name (8 letters or less)
you like, I named mine custom.txt

4.  Now change the extension from: custom.txt to custom.res this gets the file ready for
the next step. *Windows will warn you if you change the file extension then all kinds
of bad things may happen, laugh and change it anyway. Nothing bad will happen.

5.  Open a dos window Type cd\rowan\mig and hit enter. It should look
     like this:
C:\WINDOWS>rowan\mig..after you hit enter you will be in the rowan
directory, C:\rowan\mig ...hang on, you are almost there.

6. Type: TT2 -r YOURFILENAME.res    note: Be aware TT2 is a touch little program,
sometimes it likes all lower case letters and sometimes it likes upper case, if you hit
a snag keep trying, close and reopen the dos window and try it again.  If that doesn't
work reopen the dos window and pass  the entrails of a freshly slain squirrel over the
keyboard while you chant the name of Chuck Yeager.  This has always worked for me.
Also there are spaces between TT2 and -r and between -r and custom.res ...dos is
really picky like that.  If you named your .res file "custom" it will look like this:
     C:\rowan\mig TT2 -r custom.res

7.
Hit enter and you should see the following in your dos window:  If not seek out a squirrel.

8.  Run Mig Alley and the skull should be gone.  You can still choose whatever nose art you
want in campaign mode and if you want to substitute a different nose art for Single
Missions and  Hot Shot just repeat the above steps but paste in as nose1.bmp the art
     of your choosing.
